The Magic of Encaustic

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is a form of painting that involves a heated wax medium to which colored pigments have been added. The molten mix is applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are sometimes used.

We will be using beeswax and pigments and exploring a variety of techniques - Carving, Photo Transfer, Heating/Melting. All supplies included. Bring a photocopied image you would like to photo transfer.

This workshop is for adults only.

Agua Viva

Living water is an art exhibition and performance that explores our connection to water  beyond the material and physical. Artists attending Santa Rosa Arts and Healing were asked to create work  that responded to concepts of water as a healer, teacher, embodiment  and Cathartic force.

Exhibition curated by Rocio Graham.

Presenting Artists:

 Amanda Ma (U.S.A) is a ceremonialist, community arts organizer, and weaver of textiles and connections. She comes from Filipinx and Celtic ancestry -lineages with culturally rich traditions. She serves an Artistic Programs Manager in the U.S. Southwest, helming her region’s largest festivals, public art program, and directing multiple gallery sites. Amanda’s artistry is grounded in ritual, symbolism of sacred objects, femininity, and natural materials.

 

 Nix Palomba (United Kingdom) is a Latina post-graduate theatre teaching artist, storyteller and intuitive tarot healer based in London, UK. She comes from a matrilineal line of storyteller healers and uses the performing arts and oral alchemy to heal, teach, channel, and translate the language of intuition through the mediumship of musculature. Nix has developed a practice called ‘Embodied Tarot’ which combines the somatic acting and Laban mind-body centres.

 

Laura Admussen was born on Mohkinstsis, Treaty 7 territory; Calgary, Alberta, where she currently lives and works. The seeds of her intuitive, inquisitive, and industrious nature were planted by her Mother, Grandmother, and her relationship with the land.   She created a conceptual foundation for her art practice during undergraduate studies at Emily Carr University. And found a home to study and nurture her passion for fine-craft traditions at NSCAD University, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her artistic expressions and topics of interest continue to expand through independent studies in the fields of art therapy, textiles, psychology, and spirituality.

 

Tamera Olsen, B.F.A., B.Ed. is the artist in residence at Louis Riel School in Calgary, Alberta, where she recently collaborated with 1000 students, teachers, community members and volunteers over the course of a year to realize a mosaic 10’x 56’ on the exterior façade. She is a painter, print maker, photographer, and sculptor, and is in museum and private collections across the United States and western Canada. Her solo show, Reflections on the Inner Landscape, exhibited in Burnaby, British Columbia and documented her time in the southwest desert of the United States. Tamera has served as a volunteer on arts councils and museum boards throughout her career. She is a certified teacher in Alberta and British Columbia, an interdisciplinary author and collaborator, and a lifelong learner.

 

 Samantha Davies is a self taught mixed media artist living in the UK, exploring the creation of monochromatic, timeless art to evoke emotions and connection. She lays bare her emotions on the floor of her studio creating in a mediative rhythmic dance, large scale sculpted silk art. Her work reflects her life experiences, the twists and turns of womanhood and the beauty of change, transmuting experiences into art that embraces imperfections with inspiration from the natural world around her.

 

Ashley Slemming, or "The Contemplative Curator," is a curator, art writer, and arts educator. Since 2015, they have worked with a variety of artists and arts organizations, each creatively engaging in visual and cultural storytelling projects in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. Ashley has developed programs and exhibitions with Alberta Printmakers, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition (TREX) Program, Alberta University of the Arts, Colouring it Forward, Exposure Photography Festival, Illingworth Kerr Gallery, and the Marion Nicoll Gallery.

Echos of the Forest Art Exhibition

Christina Lake Arts and Artisans Society is excited to present Echoes of the Forest, an art exhibition that showcases the talent of 5 local artists.  This exhibition explores the artist's connection to the beautiful forests that sustain and enrich our community. These artists will present stunning works that inspires us to connect more deeply to the forest around us.

Exhibition celebration night is June 7th  4:30 pm - 6:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.

The Gallery at Arts on 3 will be open daily 11am - 1pm.

Leora Gesser is a BC artist, retired college instructor, published researcher and academic. She has created theater sets, designed and painted a cover for a published research book, and has shown in student exhibitions. She attended ACAD for four years (2003, 2008 - 2011) where she actively participated in the Painting and Drawing Department.

Leah Carnahan adores creativity and using her heart, hands and imagination to create. Art is a gift in her life in many ways . She feels a deep joy creating for herself and encouraging others to make art. She is a founding member of the Christina Lake Arts and Artisan Society, where she loves to host and attend workshops. She arranged yearly art shows for CLES students at the Christina Lake Homecoming. She is the co-founder of the Himalayan Art Museum and Thangka Painting School and has exhibited their art internationally in India, Europe, Australia, USA and Canada. Locally her work in felt, textiles and paint has been displayed at the Christina Lake, Grand Forks and Penticton Art Galleries.

Lauren Carnahan is a self-taught watercolour artist. She has loved creating art throughout her life and has focused on watercolour painting for the last 6 years. She grew up in Christina Lake and teaches watercolour workshops with CLAAS. If you are interested in seeing more of her work, you can visit her Instagram page @laurenshae.art.

Leta Heiberg-Bak has called Grand Forks home on and off for most of her life having spent some time in her youth on Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii.  She attended Alberta College of Art and Design majoring in sculpture before changing direction and getting a diploma in Fashion Production at Olds College. Her art work focuses on local landscapes and the feelings exchanged in nature. Mediums and techniques used in her work range from painting in acrylic and watercolour, sewing, ceramics, sculpture and drawing.

Carol Mitchell primarily focuses on drawing, painting, encaustic, collage and mixed media. She graduated University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and attended Concordia University, Banff School of Fine Arts and the University of Oregon. She has participated in artists residencies in Gushul Studio - Artist in residence- Coleman AB, Pouch Cove- Artist in Residence- Corner Brook NL and has  exhibited in  Lethbridge, Montreal, Eugene, Victoria and Grand Forks. Her work has been acquired by the Collection of Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the University of Lethbridge, Pouch Cove Foundation, NL and the Michael Williams Collection in Victoria, B.C.

Presenting Artists:

Brandi Rawluk is a Vancouver born multi-disciplinary artist, specializing in narrative, iconographic and storytelling art. She draws inspiration from nature, botany, folklore, ritual, Elder-magic, and from her own mixed European and Romani heritage. A dive into Brandi's work will send you on a visual journey which exalts the side of beauty that is rarely celebrated. 
 

Emily Pickering is a queer artist of settler descent born and currently living in Mohkinstsis, Calgary, Alberta. In 2021, her debut film, Static in My Skin, was screened at both Montreal’s FNC festival and home province’s WIFTA film festival. In 2022 they were selected to write for the Illingworth Ker Galleries Emerging Art Writers program.
 

Rose L. Williams is a Montreal born, Caribbean-Canadian mixed media artist working with nature’s chemistry based in Vancouver BC & a graduate of the University of Fraser Valley, Langara College and Emily Carr University of Art & Design. An early career in photography provides the grounding for her mixed media nature themed paintings and textiles.
 

Bethany Pardoe left Nelson BC in 2021 to attend Emily Carr University of Art and Design, that passion has transformed into the sapling of a professional practice. These days, Pardoe is interested in anything and everything story and has made it the centre of her creative exploration.
 

Miriam Fabijan is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist, author, and independent curator. She currently lives and creates in Calgary/Mohkinstsis, Canada. She is a graduate of the University of Calgary (BFA) and NSCAD University (MFA). She was twice an Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Her artwork has been exhibited extensively across Canada and in Europe and can be found in several public and private collections in Canada, the US, and Europe, including the Canada Council Art Bank and the Walter Phillips Gallery for Contemporary Art. 
 

Vanessa Bolinger a queer artist from the southern Alberta prairies currently living in British Columbia, on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh nations. My interest lies in pursuing an Interdisciplinary art practice which examines familial heritage and relationship to land. Through the repetitive motion and meditative qualities of drawing and metal working, I seek to elicit the transcendence of vast environments and the beings which rely on them.
